Integrative Veterinary Care

Integrative Veterinary Care is the melding of conventional Western medicine-you know the regular medicine you have sought out for your horse, all along and other modalities such as Veterinary Acupuncture, Chiropractic care, Laser therapy and using herbal medications. This is a dramatic paradigm shift, moving from a pharmacologically based solution to a therapy based solution to help heal the horse and solve the problem. This is a much more holistic approach to veterinary medicine than has previously been available to horse owners.

We have found that these modalities have opened up an entirely new way to practice medicine. And the horses LOVE it!

We start with an exam, just like any other Vet appointment. After we have visited about your concerns and done a physical exam we can discuss what can be done for your horse’s particular problem. Often, we can find an area that has been overlooked by regular Veterinary medicine and create a treatment plan that will address this problem.

Integrative Medicine is very effective in the treatment of many chronic diseases such as:

  • COPD (heaves)
  • Recurrent Uveitis (Moon blindness)
  • Back pain
  • Arthritis (DJD)

The Goal

The goal of therapy in treating chronic diseases is always to keep the horse as symptom-free as possible and keep the horse working. This is done by strengthening the horse’s body, not just treating the symptoms. That is why these modalities are so powerful. Moon blindness for example.

The Therapy

The usual therapy consists of steroid eye meds, orally anti-inflammatory medications and eventually loss of sight in the affected eye, occasionally, surgery is recommended to remove the eye.

Integrative Therapy

Integrative therapies give us strong herbal medications, both topical and oral, that help calm the process down at the starting point.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture stimulates blood flow around nd the eye, relieving pain and inflammation. This gives us fewer episodes and these episodes are often much less severe than previously. The horse can return to function sooner and is much more comfortable.

ERU

ERU is a chronic and progressive disease, with integrative therapies, we can slooooowww the progression down. Your horse will maintain his eyesight long. That is a win for all of us.
